Why is the debug console not working in VS Code?

Let's say I want to output something to the console using JS, as you can see from screenshot 1. I switched to VS Code, partly because it has a debugger built into it out of the box. But, it doesn’t work a damn thing, or I don’t understand how it works, you can’t enter anything here (screenshot 2). Why?
