Why is PNG preferred?

Hello everyone, I have a lot of images in my application, and in jpeg format they 'weigh' much less than in png.
I saw on a couple of sites (where I teach development for android) the following content:

Android поддерживает следующие форматы файлов: .png (предпочтителен), .jpg (приемлем), .gif (нежелателен).

Why png is more preferable than jpg, I know about alpha channel text, etc., but I have simple photos, no alpha channel, no text on them, simple photos, such as nature, cars, etc.
Can I use jpg without damage (how would it didn’t sound stupid), it’s just somehow alarming ...
Thank you all in advance)

These formats have different purposes due to their different strengths and weaknesses.
For photos, for example, jpeg is great, but for icons it cannot be categorical.

I emphasized for myself that if possible, it is better to always use png, the only negative is the weight of the pictures. jpg only if you don't need the same quality as png. Well gif is just for petty animation
