Another question is that between you and your hoster there are a bunch of unnamed persons, and passwords are flying there in text form.
All in all, it's not that scary.

Because the FTP protocol was invented in the shaggy times when computers were big :) It has no security from the word at all. Accordingly, all passwords are transmitted in clear text. If you care about this - well, pass it on, technically it will work ...

Use SFTP, you don't need to install anything on the server, it works out of the box. Google it.
