Why is http 12 times faster than https in ab tests?

Greetings! There is a VPS 512 mb 2 core with OVZ virtualization. NGINX web server, php code reads .txt and generates 54kb html. When testing through the apache benchmark over http, it gives an average of 2937 rps, I connected an ssl certificate from letsencrypte and the same test over https gives an average of 235 rps, i.e. the difference is 12 times. Is this normal for https or is it OVZ or something else? Thank you!

PS: I installed apache2 instead of nginx, rps over https fell to 73

You want tea, you go to the kitchen and pour yourself tea - http
You want tea, go to the kitchen, but in front of it you need to turn on the light by typing the pincode that will come in sms, tap dance and do "Ku", but when you come to the kitchen and take a cup, it turns out that a 16-pood weight is attached to the cup + a kettle made of lead scales of 200 kg - ssl :)
