Why I decided so:
I downloaded vpsupd.exe. He does something, then says that the Defender needs to be removed and does not update the databases.
And Avast itself cannot update the databases and itself.

This is also facilitated by the fact that in many antiviruses there is not only a stupid definition by signature, but also an analysis of the behavior of the software, as well as heuristic algorithms that analyze nothing at all.
As for the Defender - it does not need to be removed, since it can be easily turned off. As a rule, installing a third-party antivirus will automatically disable Defender. If this does not happen, disable it manually, there is a button on it (although I'm not sure that it is in all versions of Windows).
Avast has many configuration options for setting up update modes. It did not work automatically - update manually.
And the last thing: if you choose between Avast and Defender, I would choose Defender, I would delete Avast. The reason is simple: all these watchman-class antiviruses are approximately equal in efficiency, but the Defender loads the system and the user less.
