Why has php abandoned the good old mongo driver in favor of the bad mongodb driver?

They had a good full-fledged driver, and even gridfs supported everything.
But they recommend not to use it anymore and offer a new and inconvenient raw and unsupported Mongodb driver.
Did they overeat mushrooms there or what is the reason?

Can you elaborate on your "supporting everything" and "supporting nothing"? Or is it just gridfs?
