Why download git?

Just starting to delve into the topic... I can't understand the meaning of the git console. Doesn't the github site have it's functionality? Why complicate things with additional software?

You seem to be confusing cause and effect.
Github exists because git exists, and is one of the tools to make it lightweight and stripped down.
In turn, git does not depend on github at all, and in fact knows nothing about it.
