Why doesn't xnview work on ubuntu 18.04?

I'm trying to install xnview on a freshly installed ubuntu 18 Xnview MP, it gives an installation report but doesn't work.

It's Linux, what do you want? "If you don't like it, fix it yourself" (c)
You can try installing the previous version of the program (from the repositories, of course) or use an alternative.

Run from the console - see what error it gives, look at the program logs (if any).

normally works at home on hubunt 18.10, recently updated. passed without a hitch.
I looked where it was put, did it run from there ?? did the desktop apps work??
