Why doesn't tomcat start after adding Spring security?

On startup, the Catalina log shows the following:
08-May-2016 20:00:23.489 SEVERE [RMI TCP Connection(2)-127.0.0.1] org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext.startInternal Context [] startup failed due to previous errors
