Squares means the display is not initialized. And it is not initialized because there is no connection or the code of the curve or the address is not the same or the stars did not converge .

Judging by the number of wires and the name, an i2c module is used. But judging by the picture, it is not soldered. And check the contrast - the picture is similar to the contrast twisted to the maximum - it will not show like that, only rectangles.

I see you are using a display driver. Are the libraries worth it? If yes - check the program, contacts, contrast on the driver, most likely it is set normally, but you never know, check.
