Why doesn't it let me save an open file on the server?

There is a file server on windows 2003. The dispatcher opens the daily log file over the network and does not close it until the end of the shift. So, sometimes (not every time) when saving a file at the end of a shift, a save error occurs. If you close the file (by saving it locally), then the re-opened file is saved normally. What could be causing this error and how can I fix this problem?
