Why doesn't diff coloring work in git 2.10 on MacOs x?

git

Installed the latest version of git, added lines to the config.
[color "diff"]
old = red strike
new = green italic
Checked the output of git config -l
color.diff.old=red strike
color.diff.new=green italic
And diff still shows the default color
