What does fatal: unable to create threaded lstat mean?

I decided to check the git status on the hosting (git status) and it gave the following error
fatal: unable to create threaded lstat

I read the forums - they recommend disabling index preloading:
git config core.preloadIndex false

But I don't quite understand what this index affects? If the hosting does not have enough resources, I would buy more, but I don’t understand which ones?
