Why doesn't auth basic work on files in a directory?

Require valid-user
to .htaccess I go to site.ru/dir - authorization is issued, I go to /dir/file.any_extension - authorization is not issued. I noticed it literally by accident, but it's good that I noticed at least.

Wangu that Apache is preceded by nginx, which is configured to distribute static files, bypassing Apache
