Why does the conductor lag when refilling the PC?

Hello. I'm used to hiding icons on the desktop so that the picture is clearly visible. Used the desktop as a folder in explorer. Then, after a while of storing files, the explorer began to lag terribly. At random, I found out that this is due to too many elements. The problem is solved, but I want to understand why this is happening.

Re-reading the list of files each time for changes (and sometimes their properties, thumbnails, etc.) is not exactly a very fast task.
"The desktop is for..." ?
