Why does mysqldump fail with an error. How to overcome?

Good afternoon,
Initial data:
CentOS release 6.5 (Final) x64;
mysqldump Ver 10.13 Distrib 5.5.25a, for Linux (x86_64)
MySQL Server version: 5.5.5-10.1.0-MariaDB MariaDB Server
Trying to dump an arbitrary table (using the mysqldump utility) results in:
mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'SET OPTION' SQL_QUOTE_SHOW_CREATE=1': Unknown system variable 'OPTION' (1193)
Is there any way to overcome this?

Is this option missing in /etc/my.cnf ( SQL_QUOTE_SHOW_CREATE=1 )?
If it is registered, comment it out for the duration of the dump.
