Why does letter-spacing between 0 and 1px work, how is that possible?

Unclear. I have a screen with dpi 1, i.e. 1 CSS pixel is equal to a physical pixel.
How is it that the font is rendered differently if you set the size to letter-spacing for example 0.025em?
