Why does installing Bower via npm take forever?

I go to the console, I write:
npm install -g bower
The wand starts to spin, and so on endlessly.
Git installed.
What am I doing wrong?

There are strange connection problems if you sit through a proxy. But, in theory, some error should fall out sooner or later.
