Why does Habr and other similar portals need a mobile application?

Why habr and, for example, other similar portals (peek-a-boo, vc, etc.) need an application.
It's just that these are information resources, not shops or something like that. Just creating a mobile application is a rather expensive process. Does it have any economic effect? And what is it?
