Why does eth run out of allocated memory?

I run :
geth --cache 512 --fast, but geth doesn't care, and it still starts eating the entire frame.
Also, if the axis is on ZFS, is it worth creating xfs in a zvol for the blockchain, because xfs is significantly faster with large files?
