Why does desktop Linux (openSUSE) freeze (hang)?
Good day.
openSUSE LEAP 42.3 x86_64
2gb RAM
At random (relatively) times, the system completely freezes: the screen freezes, the keyboard and mouse stop working. The only way out is to restart the PC. Such freezes can be either 3 minutes after starting the computer, or 2 hours later. It happens that with a heavy load there are no such freezes, but it happens that they appear even with a minimum load.
What could be the matter and how to fix it?
It is difficult to connect them with something, but I can clarify (not the fact that this is precisely because of this) that several times I observed a freeze when I first opened a site in Google Chrome, and a certain number of seconds of visiting passed on this site. But there was also a freeze when the desktop with widgets was simply displayed. I also observed several times freezing while scrolling with the mouse wheel on the site.

Look at the system logs, dmesg.
it happened to me when the ssd disk died due to timeouts, although the check showed that everything was ok with it ...
I had this, I sat on Debian for several years because of this. he showed himself just fine - there were no freezes at all.
Solution:
I got up dead on my laptop with Intel guts on 16.04, and searched for a problem for a long time until I found this: ... “If it hangs tightly on distra higher than 14.04.3, then 99% that this is due to Intel graphics. I had regular freezes after 20 - 40 - 90 min. It was decided so sudo gedit /etc/default/grub bring the line GRUB_MDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to the following form (if nothing was added) GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=1" Save, close. sudo update-grub And reboot. The problem should disappear if Intel HD is to blame. "... IT HELPED ME. I specifically drove for a week without reloading the video in the chrome browser.
