Why does an empty file open on a Debian VM?

Hi all.
I have this problem: I created a virtual machine (debian9 without gui) in order to test my code. I added the one with the code to the shared folders. I can easily enter the folder (already in the virtual machine), but after I open the file (via vi / nano), it is empty. I checked the file on the bakery itself - everything is fine. I decided to just test others, see how they open. Also empty.
What would you advise to do in such a situation?

What didn't suit WSL? There are the same vi and nano.
Mount via CIFS shared directories. Forwarding directories in virtual machines is still that glucodrome.
