Why does 4G+ consume too much power?

When using 4G +, the smartphone starts to warm up and charging "melts before our eyes". And if you run an online game on a 4G + connection, then the smartphone goes into throttling. With a Wi-Fi connection, there are no such problems.
Does 4G really need so many resources, or is its implementation on Huawei's Honor 30i to blame?

4G operates at higher frequencies than 3G, therefore, with poor signal quality, much more power is required than for 3G. Compared to Wi-Fi, the frequencies are closer, but the Wi-Fi receiver is much closer than the 4G tower and needs less power proportional to the square of the distance to provide the same quality. There are still different algorithms for optimizing energy consumption, but in general it is something like this.

the same on the iPhone. Moreover, the heating depends on the quality of the signal.
my estimate of power consumption is 2.5 - 5 watts

There were many articles on Habré about the problems of implementing 4g specifically in the CIS. Example: https://habr.com/ru/post/237947/
