Why do you need to install Sphinx on your computer if you write it in a Gemfile (Ruby on Rails)?

As I understand it, in order to use spinhx, you need to install it on your computer.
If it doesn’t work without it, then what happens if I deploy the project, it doesn’t seem to be installed there?

in the gem there is only an adapter for working with the sphinx, and the stump is clear that the sphinx itself is also needed.
