Why do you need a rectangular selection of layers in Adobe Illustrator CC 2015, what does it give?

I have no idea what it's for. How and in what situations to use it?

I don't use CC15, but it's probably to select scattered layers.
Does it work with ctrl in conjunction? You select from A to B, then from B to C you skip and from C to D you select again.
