Why do paths relative to the folder root not work on the local server?

Good evening! For website development I use a local server. But the problem is that I have to specify the path to the files "../../path/to/my/images", but "/path/to/my/images" will be convenient. When I have to transfer the project to a working server, then there I have to change exactly all the paths relative to the project. And each time to remove "../../" is very inconvenient and annoying.
