Why do media queries use ems?

Hello!
I don't understand what's the point:

It's from foundation. But I didn't just see them.
Em seems to be relevant for the font. What is the point of setting the screen size in ems?
I predict the answer - for devices / browsers with a base font size other than 16. Is this really relevant today? And does the base font size affect the size of the viewport, which is always fixed in pixels (320, 768, 1024 pixels, etc.)?

Look at the commit history to find when it appeared and what motivated it, ask the developers.
