Why do IMAP clients open multiple connections to the server at once? Thunderbird, for example, by default opens as many as 5, and right away. What is it for?

I assume (I may be wrong) that this is necessary for asynchronous loading of data of various mime types, for example, when you open a message, the text is loaded in one and you see it immediately, while in others there are attachment pictures, etc.
