Why do external hard drives fail?
More precisely, not the disks themselves, but usb adapters inside the container. No specific load, but they stop working stably.
I don't know what to choose now: buy a new external hard drive, an adapter, or assemble from a 2.5" drive and a container.

After several drives died in USB boxes, I switched exclusively to branded external drives (WD, Seagate) - the last 2.5 "serve for more than 5 years with infrequent use, once or twice a week. There are no adapters in them - the controller immediately with USB
There is one Transcend 2.5" USB box - also no problem.
Take discs of normal brands, there will be no questions.
main plus controller (box) + disk, this is a separate warranty.
if you do not plan to change the disk separately, then the branded kit is quite suitable.
drives are dying. unexpectedly, early, out of time, etc.

, I lost a couple of Agestar controllers, several boxes from different manufacturers (usb2-3), and several brand kits (seagate, wd, transcend).
Now I use the controller and the brand kit. and I don’t expect miracles from them)
so that you don’t become the culprit yourself - be careful. the rest is chance.
most of the pockets (not to be confused with external boxed solutions) die for many reasons, but the main one is the pockets themselves, in which there is often a cheap controller and there are power problems
