Why do browsers slow down in Ubuntu and how to fix it?

There are two versions of Ubuntu, one is on virtualbox, the other is on a flash drive. In both cases, fox, chrome and opera are wildly buggy.
Constant freezes, and when scrolling through pages, it looks like a slideshow. In Windows, everything works perfectly.
