What is it for? I found a description of DNSCrypt on Habré, but I'm interested in the reason why DNS traffic initially goes outside.

If there is no explicit route to the DNS server, then queries will go through the default gateway.
And in addition. If you suddenly want to wrap DNS queries in a tunnel, think about where DNS queries will go if there is no tunnel?! And will the VPN itself work if DNS queries go through it?
