Why did Ubuntu stop working?

I pressed "End the session", everything hung to hell, brazenly restarted, I select Ubuntu in GRUB, a black screen appears and "_" flashes.
What should I do?

What to do?

Pray that journaling has been enabled and it is possible to restore the file system. Most likely she flew off from a hard reboot. Details here linuxnow.ru/view.php?id=90 . In the future, if the system hangs hard, go to the console with ctrl+alt+F9, log in and restart the system with sudo reboot .

Well, since the gurb config is displayed, then /boot is alive. But / (root) seems to have died. Boot from LiveCD, repair file systems, unless of course they have turned into a mess.

1) Boot from the OS installation disk, select recovery;
2) Run the command sudo fsck -y -f -c /dev/sdX1, where X is the drive letter. We do this for each section.
Most likely it should help.
