Why did tempdb grow?

I made a working database rebuild index + update statistics through a maintenance plan, having previously disconnected all clients from the database, after the application was launched, tempdb grew to 50 gigabytes, and performance dipped, queries that used to work out 5-10 minutes began to run for almost an hour.
