Why did PayPal cancel the refund from the seller?

Hello!
There have never been any problems, neither with PayPal, nor with Ebay, but here they really surprise me very unpleasantly.
The fact is that I bought a lot on Ebay consisting of an Apple Led Cinema 27 "Mac Mini monitor, a keyboard and a computer mouse. The lot cost me $ 831 (32,900 rubles). The shipment was only within the United States. I had to use the intermediary Shopfans. When the parcel arrived at the warehouse of the intermediary, they sent me photos showing that the monitor has glass damage.I created a dispute on Ebay that the product did not match the description of the seller.I asked the cost of this spare part and was already preparing to repair the monitor.
When the parcel came to me in Russia, I noticed with chagrin that in addition to the glass, the matrix was also damaged. Replacing the matrix is a matter of completely different money (for example, on the same Ebee I found one matrix at a price of 17,000 and about 4,000 for shipping).
I informed the seller about all this in a timely manner through messages in the dispute. The seller, by the way, was quite responsive, he was very sorry and said that he had created his own dispute with Fedex to obtain insurance (it was this company that delivered the package from the seller to the intermediary warehouse).
Next, the seller offered to repair the monitor at my own expense, and then send him photos of receipts for the repair. Here I had to lie a little to the seller - to say that I myself was in the USA when I bought the monitor, but at the moment I flew to Russia and took the monitor with me, and I will repair it in Russia. I had to not tell the whole truth about the intermediary, so that the American would not have unnecessary questions, and I could not find an American check for repairs.
The cost of replacing glass and matrix was 9,000 rubles + 25,000 rubles = 34,000 rubles. With a discount, they did all this for me for 32,200 rubles (about $ 838), i.e. a few dollars more than the price of the lot! I repaired the monitor and sent all photos of the receipt to the seller. A few days later I received from the American a refund of the amount that I spent on repairs. But this refund came to PayPal's account, although I paid for the lot from the card. I did not pay attention to this moment. After that, I closed the dispute on Ebay, gave the seller a positive feedback, and also offered some help in his dispute with Fedex.
A few days later, I saw that PayPal canceled the payment from the seller with the following comments:
- The payment was canceled or returned. PayPal refunded transaction fees (if any).
- PayPal canceled this payment due to payment review or dispute. The funds have been returned to the sender's PayPal account.
- Refund from: Jamie Richard Postponed to Oct 06, 2014
One of the last messages on eBay in dispute is this:
- Refund Information: US $836.75 Refund is being processed and should be in your PayPal account on 10/05/2014.
---- this despite the fact that the American sent me money on September 29, and here it is said about some kind of October 5 ...
As a result, the money that the seller sent me as compensation went back to his account. As a result, I spent money on buying the lot itself, then on repairing the monitor, and ended up with nothing. Well, it would be 1000-2000 rubles, which you could close your eyes to, but here in total it runs very well: 32200 + 32900 = 65100 !!!
Why did PayPal cancel the refund operation? Is it possible that the American simply transferred the funds to me (without processing them as a return), from which they came to my PayPal account, and not to the card --- and now PayPal wants to do everything according to the rules? Or maybe PayPal was confused by the refund amount more than the lot amount? Or a Russian check for repairs?
Who thinks about this situation? Thank you in advance.

If the seller did not make a return, but sent a payment, then he can also open a dispute on it, make a refund, etc.
