Why did app search stop working in Windows 8.1?

Previously, the search for applications worked fine, but now I noticed that not a single installed application is found in the search engine. Why is this happening? Is this feature enabled/disabled in the settings somewhere? Any ideas how this can be fixed?

The issue was resolved by switching to Windows 10.
