Why develop GNU Assembler when there is Netwide Assembler with good documentation?

GAS and NASM are very similar in syntax, but GAS is largely undocumented.

Why develop GNU Assembler

- this is an assembler that normally works with gcc;
is an assembler that supports dofiga (more than 70) processor architectures, not just x86.
GAS is practically undocumented
