Why can't you boil water in the microwave?

I wanted to conduct an experiment, to check that a large cup (≈ 0.8 l) of water would boil faster - a kettle or a microwave. The kettle (1000 W) coped with the tail in 2 minutes, and the microwave oven (1200 W) did not even have 5 minutes. Who can explain why?
