Why can't I open ports in a VM on ESXi?

Good afternoon. There is a server with ESXi, one of whose virtual machines acts as a gateway - it costs opnsense. It is necessary to open some ports, but after performing the appropriate actions in opnsense, the ports are still not visible from the Internet. What can be wrong?
In general, is it good practice to host a gateway on a server? Is it worth taking it to a separate machine?
