Why aren't emoticons displayed?

Hello everyone, I have a little problem. Emoticons are not displayed on Android. To be more precise, they are displayed, but not all. The emoticons that I have in the google keyboard are displayed, but often friends send some of their emoticons and a crossed out rectangle comes instead.

I know it's a font issue. Is there a way to fix this quickly?
