Why are the rights 775 missing on the cache and templates_c folders according to the Smarty documentation?

Smarty 3.1.32.
The documentation on the site states that permissions 770 or 775 are required on the cache and templates_c folders for the template engine to work.
At me, with these rights, the 500th error is produced. Works normally only with rights 777.
What could be the reason?

It is possible that www is not the owner or is not on the list of users in the group who have write permissions.
