Why are php files downloaded when using php-fpm nginx?

I have an index.php file which is located in /var/www/html/index.php
When accessed via http://[ip]/index.php it is simply downloaded instead of displayed.
nginx.conf file

default_type application/octet-stream;

I suffered for a long time then, I forgot to write a solution here, in the end it still worked, I set the config like this:

location ~ [^/]\.php(/|$) {
                fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+?\.php)(/.*)$;
                if (!-f $document_root$fastcgi_script_name) {return 404;}
                fastcgi_param HTTP_PROXY "";
                include fastcgi_params;
                fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php/php7.2-fpm.sock;
                fastcgi_index index.php;
                fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $request_filename;
        }

and it is important to change the owner of the file to www-data + dancing with a tambourine and restarting somehow everything worked

Запрос не попадает в нужный локейшн конфига sites-available/default
Необходимо разобраться почему.
Банальная проблема - подключен совсем не этот конфиг.
Все конфиги подключаются из основного: nginx.conf
А в нем написано:

include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf;
include /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*;

Поэтому проверьте эти директории на предмет наличия других конфигов или ссылок на другие конфиги.
