Why are php files being downloaded instead of being executed?

I follow the link localhost/something.php to see what will be displayed after the script is executed, but the file is stupidly downloaded. Whether this is a browser issue or my server issue, I don't know...

Well, either php itself is not installed on the server or does not work.

Does your Apache know about the existence of php?
