Why are hosts behind a router connected to the local network not visible by name?

The point is this. There is an Asus RT-N12 router, which is connected to our domain local network. A computer is connected to the router. When I try to access the nodes of this local network, I get only by IP address, but they are not available by name. I found the setting in the router Local network - DHCP server - DNS IP address, set our local DNS. In the properties of the network connection on the DNS computer is "obtain a DNS server automatically", it is determined. What else can be done?

And who said that Asus RT-N12 can be a DNS server? And how does the "DNS that is used on the network" know about the names of the computers behind the router?

No public DNS can know or resolve the hostnames of your local network.
If you want to have local name resolution - run your own DNS on the local network (which must work in conjunction with DHCP), you can do this: DNS server .

You need to start with the fact that there is such a thing as DNS. It is implemented "somewhere", for example, it can be the provider's DNS. Or your own DNS is raised, which then you really need to administer. Well, actually further - a specific DNS can only know the names of "its" specific nodes. It is clear that the DNS provider does not know the names of your intralocal hosts ......

For example:
there is a computer named buhgalter_galya which is located in the bigass.com domain
. Your local DNS is registered in your router.
try executing the command:
First option:
nslookup buhgalter_galya
Second option
nslookup buhgalter_galya.bigass.com
The second option is working, now regarding to make it shorter...well, since the computer is not in the domain....that's why it's shorter and doesn't work...
Since with a domain in general, when it never worked, nothing comes to mind except:
1. Make static dns records either on a computer or asus (if it can do this)
, for example, in the hosts file
buhgalter_galya 192.168.10.1
, this is provided that the clients have static IPs.
