Why are Fira Code ligatures not working?

The Fira Code font description states that it is supported by VS Code and Atom editors.
When choosing the Fira Code font, contrary to promises, ligatures do not work.

When choosing the Monoid font, this problem does not exist.

Both fonts are installed by copying to the ~/.fonts folder and then running the fc-cache -f -v command
