This occurs when the text is displayed in a font that does not contain glyphs for the characters used in the text. In this case, the next font from the list of fallback fonts specified in the styles for the element is used for display, or, if it is not there, then the default font for the corresponding font family.
Thus, you need to check what characters you are loading in the font. Usually this is a consequence of thoughtless subsetting'a.
