Why after closing the browser, the process remains and takes up RAM?

Periodically, after closing the browser, the process itself remains and takes up RAM.
Browser version: 26.0
OS: Ubuntu 13.10 x64

If it's google-chrome, then this is a feature that is turned off somewhere in the settings.

And what browser? If Firefox, then a similar situation has been observed since version 25 on both Windows and nix.

This is not uncommon now. Try checking the "Continue running background apps after closing" checkbox.
