Who had experience with Indians on ODesk?

My question is directed to those who have had experience (as an employer) with web developers from India (Pakistan, Philippines).
Everyone knows the meaning of the expression "Hindu code", but I would like to understand what they are in general : What is the quality of development really ? How are they with commitment, organization, discipline, etc.? What are the main disadvantages of such developers?

There are very competent comrades, hardworking, attentive to details, etc. but require close attention and control. We did not have the nerve to work, we tried several times. He knows everything and knows how, but he won’t lift a finger if you don’t ask, even banal, obvious things. As a script - if you do not prescribe what to do, it will fail :) If there is a detailed description of the task - maybe. But if you need to make decisions - I do not advise.

I talked quite a lot with Indians, earlier with testers / programmers, now I study with engineers. Among them there are quite knowledgeable adequate guys, but ... working with Indians is like programming in assembler, you need to very very clearly indicate all the actions step by step. If you give an Indian a choice, he will choose the worst solution, if you do not clearly indicate the amount of work done, the work will be done in the minimum possible amount. This does not mean that they are bad specialists, it is just the way they are used to living and working. If you are ready to give tasks in this form, then everything will be fine, but it takes quite a lot of time.

Their work must be carefully monitored. And so they know how to work and love, though in their own way.
There are intelligent Indians, but they are few.

Very much depends on the level, obviously, but true.
There are a lot of "writers" among the Indians, this is the minimum price for a perfect shit code at a fairly high speed. Sometimes it's necessary.
A good layer of the middle level of progers who won’t lift a finger to do something outside the TK. It says “news posting script” - you will have a news posting script, don’t just wait to see the option to delete news or edit there, because the TK was for posting.
There are few high-level Indians as such, they usually outsource to the states and their prices are commensurate, or they stupidly resell average progers, which also affects prices. So they make little sense.
If you clearly set the task and do not chase the minimum price tag, then you can get a solution to the problem 2 times cheaper than Russian coders, all other things being equal. However, high-level Indians and ordinary soldiers are best avoided.

Exactly the same shitty code as the Russians, only the Russians, according to my observations, are even worse and the Russians really don’t like to know mathematics.
The myth about a large amount of shit code from Indians lies in the number of Indians, there are several billion of them, respectively, there are more programmers, well, proportionally, there is more shit code. If there were a trillion Russians, then there would be the most shit in the Russian world.

It was like this for me, I talked with several candidates (the order was for Unity3d), I chose one person who seemed very adequate (from those that had been selected by the organization’s owners before me) - the candidate showed examples of his normal code, examples of quite interesting projects, said that he has a designer in his team with whom he constantly collaborates (he also showed his work, they were so-so, but these skills were enough for the task) - in general, we agreed on the first test taxi with an advance payment of $ 100 (in fact, it was a test for further long-term cooperation on a large according to the hourly project), the task was chewed up as much as possible, it did not imply any creativity. After the start and receiving an advance payment, he disappeared and fed different stories for all messages,
I think that this case is not the rule, but you need to understand that they have somewhat different ideas about responsibility, deadlines, and correcting their mistakes.
