The top of a technical career, and not going into management (team leader, leader). Determine the fundamental architecture of the system and the internal structure. For example, how to scale a web service across many machines in a specific project, what technologies to deploy the storage of these terabytes of data, what protocols different parts of the system will use, etc.
Knowledge - an expert in his field and well versed in all related.
