Which version of Linux mint to choose 13 or 17?

Good afternoon. The situation is this - I decided to switch to Linux, the choice fell on mint. will be active in software development.
I have a laptop with a second generation i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, an nvidia geforce 410m video card and a regular hdd, not ssd - a 2012 laptop.
And so a question in that what version of a distribution kit to deliver? 13 or 17?
The laptop needs to run as fast as possible.
