Which version of Google Play Services to use in Android Studio?

Good evening everyone,
there is the latest version of Android Studio. I'm trying to connect to a Google Play Services project to use Google Maps v3.
In dependencies for Gradle I specify:
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:5.2.08'
i.e. latest version.
I open the application: "Services are not updated, update otherwise nothing will start."
I press the button - there is no update. I have version 4 with kopecks on my phone.
I also checked on a tablet with a newer android - everything is the same.
I'm trying to change the dependency to
compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:4+'
Result - everything works.
This is where I got confused. Android Studio recommends using the latest version, Google documentation recommends using the latest version. But she doesn't work.
What am I doing wrong?
